On its 500-acre campus in unincorporated Broward County, bordered by the Florida Turnpike, Sample, Powerline and Wiles roads, Monarch Hill Renewable Energy Park includes Monarch Hill landfill and its landfill gas-to-energy plant which produces enough electricity from waste to power nearly 10,000 homes per day in Broward County.
Taking in approximately 3,500 tons of waste per day, Monarch Hill landfill uses the methane gas that is produced by decomposing waste as fuel to generate nearly 11 megawatts of electricity and power 9,000 homes.
In order to be a good neighbor, Monarch Hill continuously monitors odors including Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) emissions (see upper right hand box on this page) as measured in parts per million concentration with a baseline of 0.000. The Odor Threshold is: 0.007 faint but perceptible odor; 0.045 easily detectible moderate odor; and 0.270 strong unpleasant odor.
Since opening in 1965, Monarch Hill landfill (formerly Central Disposal) has served the disposal needs of residential, municipal and commercial customers in Broward County and surrounding communities in South Florida.
To reflect this commitment to environmental sustainability, Monarch Hill Renewable Energy Park received its new name on April 9, 2011 during an Earth Day celebration as students released 300 butterflies to find new homes among the 200 butterfly attracting vines placed along the park's perimeter walls.
